چکیده

We present HST/NICMOS observations of a sample of LIRGs. We show that active star formation appears to be occurring not only in the bright nuclei of these galaxies, but also in luminous super-star clusters and giant H ii regions with ages of up to 20− 40Myr. This population of bright clusters and H ii regions is unprecedented in normal galaxies and emphasizes the effects of the extreme star formation in LIRGs.

Massive Lyman Break Galaxies at Z ∼ 3 in the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey

We investigate the properties of 1088 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 3 selected from a ∼ 2.63 deg2 sub-region of the First Look Survey field using the ground-based multi-color data and the Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data at 3–8 and 24 μm. With the wide area and the broad wavelength coverage, we sample a large number of “rare” u-band dropouts which are massive (M∗ > 10M⊙), allowing...

Potential formation sites of super star clusters in ultra-luminous infrared galaxies

Recent observational results on high spatial resolution images of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) have revealed very luminous, young, compact, and heavily obscured super star clusters in their central regions, suggested to be formed by gas-rich major mergers. By using stellar and gaseous numerical simulations of galaxy mergers, we firstly demonstrate that the central regions of ULIGs ar...

The Evidence for Massive Star Formation in Early-Type Spiral Galaxies

A recent analysis of the IRAS database indicates that the massive star formation rates in early-type (Sa-Sab) spirals are comparable to the massive star formation rates in late-type spirals. Hα imaging of some of the infrared luminous early-type spirals reveals two types of galaxies. One type shows clear signs of interaction, whereas the other type appears to host a nuclear starburst. The occur...

Dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies

This review discusses the current status of our knowledge of emission by dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies, and the uncertainties in the derivation of physical parameters from these data. The similarity of far-infrared luminous, gas-rich high redshift radio galaxies and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is discussed. Given that local ULIGs rapidly convert most o...

The Rest-frame Optical Properties of Scuba Galaxies

We present optical and near-infrared photometry for a sample of 96 dusty, far-infrared luminous galaxies. We have precise spectroscopic redshifts for all these galaxies yielding a median redshift of < z>= 2.2. The majority, 78, are submillimeter-detected galaxies lying at z = 0.2–3.6, while the remaining 18 are optically-faint μJy radio galaxies at z = 0.9–3.4 which are proposed to be similarly...
